The traveling comic book convention has been bringing some of that San Diego Comicon mojo to major cities throughout the U. for 15 years now, and has become a staple event held each spring at the Philadelphia Convention Center in the heart of center city.
In years past, comic book- and sci-fi-oriented conventions were (often deservedly) pegged as “sausage fests”—organized and mostly attended by males. The costume culture certainly attracts its fair share of women—as usual there were many Joker/Harley Quinn couples—but many were also there to look, and shop, and enjoy the show. • Along with the more balanced gender ratio came an interesting social angle: sci-fi speed dating.
There was a booth devoted to it, and a speed-dating event held at the end of the show on Sunday the 10th.
